Vicci introduced Eunice Robinson, who presented information about the BC Genealogy Society.

Eunice opened her presentation with an explanation about a change in the terms used to explain the focus of genealogy. It used to focus solo\ely on blood lines, but the focus now is on family history which is much more inclusive. It now focuses on the searcher’s history, for example were you born into your family, or were you adopted into it, or married into it?

Eunice stated that the BC Genealogy Society is the largest of its kind in Canada, and was founded in 1971 in a Richmond member’s basement. It is located in Surrey at 12837 – 76 Ave. Their website is bcgs.ca.

Eunice spoke about many on-line resources as follows:

famillysearch.org – new name for the LDS site in Salt Lake City. Free site. Type in the name you are researching, plus as much info as you have – city, province, birth date, etc.

researchwiki.com

Map of the world – pick your country, then search for name, etc.

Vicci B opened the meeting at 1:00pm

Joan D read the minutes of the Dec. 8/25 meeting and adopted them as read. Connie G seconded.

Vicci asked that we send photos from the Christmas Party to her for inclusion on our website, NSCCC@info.com

Vicci announced that instead of our regular meeting on Jan. 26, Dan Levitt, the Seniors Advocate for our area will be hosting a Coffee Chat Social to inform attendees about his role in our community and answer any questions they might have. This is a registered program and at this time, there are only 3 spots unfilled.

Next week, our speaker will be Eunice Robinson from the BC Genealogy Society.

Kristi Schwandt, Intergenerational Programmer for our area, explained why we are now expected to register for all programs run by the City of Surrey, and then showed us, with the help of a slide show, how to register for city programs, including drop-in programs such as our club meetings.

To create an account, access the My Surrey App on a web browser, or download it from the Apple Store if you have an iPhone or iPad, or from Google Play on an Android phone or tablet.

She emphasized the importance of registering and stated that it is not the same as swiping your membership card : that only indicates that you are in the building. By signing up in advance of your chosen activity, the city  can contact you in case the program is cancelled or the centre is closed on a snow-day. Registration also informs the City about the Centre’s use and value to our community.

Kristi demonstrated the procedure for creating an account with the City of Surrey. she explained that there are three ways to register : by phone, at the NSC reception desk,

or on-line.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:00pm, but NSCC instructors remained to assist attendees with the registration and program signup process.
